Baldur’s Gate 3 will finally get official mod support in September, following a summer testing period that begins today.
Patch 7, which will include the game’s modding toolkit, is now beginning testing via a closed alpha that will last about a month. In July, 1000 more players will be added as part of the closed beta.
The idea is that alpha testing will develop mod tools and bring in existing mods, while beta testing will provide feedback on these. This will then all lead up to September, when Patch 7 will roll out to everyone.
“With the intention of working on your feedback throughout the summer, this will give us time to prepare Patch 7 for release in September,” Larian wrote in an article today. blog post On Steam.
“In the meantime, we still have lots in store for you, including some anniversary frivolity, as we look back on the months following release. We’re also still pushing hard on development of the in-game photo mode, crossplay, and more improvements that will come later!”
The blog post explains why modding support is important – to avoid issues with game stability and compatibility – and goes into detail about how it will work, including enabling support for all platforms using Mod.io.
“After releasing first on PC, we hope to soon make it available to a wider community and across a variety of platforms – including Mac players as well as PlayStation and Xbox consoles,” Larian added.
It also details which mods may fall under the scope of the Dungeons & Dragons license.
“Our goal with mod.io and our partners is to strike a balance that allows for extensive modding while keeping the guidelines in mind,” Larian wrote. “While some NSFW mods and some script-heavy modifications may not be supported through the official pipeline, modding outside of our pipeline will still be an option.”
Larian Studios boss Swen Vincke recently discussed Baldur’s Gate 3 needed “a little tweaking”But only “very, very, very rarely”.
