Bread: Anniversary Edition “sold like dog dung”, says producer Jonathan Blow

According to its producer Jonathan Blow, Bread: Anniversary Edition “sold like dog feces”.

Blow regularly streams on Twitch and has discussed the sales performance of the re-release of Braid on several occasions since its release in May.

YouTube channel Blow Fan has put together a collection of clips from Blow’s streams (Photo: Instagram) VGC), in which he candidly shares his thoughts on the sales of Braid: Anniversary Edition.

On May 20, six days after the game’s launch, Blow said it was “a bit early” to look at the game’s performance, especially considering the drop in sales after release. He also said that events such as the Summer Sale could make a big contribution after launch.

“It’s not like we’re selling a million copies on day one or anything like that, which is what you expect. It’s a remaster, so you don’t expect it to be like a new game in terms of the level of hype. But we’ll just have to see where it goes,” Blow said.

Then, on June 17 (34 days after launch), Blow said the game had sold “very poorly”. “It depends on what your standards are,” he said. “If you compare it to something nostalgic like the Jeff Minter game that’s on Steam or the Atari 50, it sold well. It sold a lot better than all of those, but it still sold very little compared to what we need to make to keep the company alive.”

“The future is uncertain, let’s put it that way,” he concluded. “It hasn’t been good.”

Blow reiterated that sales were “very poor” on July 21, and again on July 22, and added that console platforms are “over the top” and that Steam is the game’s biggest platform.

Referring to comments added to the anniversary edition, Blow said: “At some point, you’ve got to know that what you did was a good thing, even if the world doesn’t really accept it, and I think this is one of those cases.”

He then goes on to say that cons and events, as well as most YouTube interviews and podcasts, are not useful for promotion.

Finally, on July 27, Blow said that “the entire industry is going through a tough time” and then when asked how many people on his development team were working on a compiler for the programming language Jai, Blow replied: “None, because we can’t pay anyone because sales are poor.”
