Sony removes 8K promises from PlayStation 5 packaging


Sony is removing mention of 8K support for the PlayStation 5 on the console packaging.

While retailers such as Argos While there are still photos of the PS5 Slim model that has 8K written on the side of the console’s box – as shown in the header image above – mention of this support has been removed from Sony’s own site.

As you can see in the image below, taken from PlayStation’s own Direct Store Just this morning the 8K mention has been removed from the side of the box.

“So apparently they removed 8K from the box of PS5s? Ha ha, that’s pretty funny and should have been done years ago,” said Digital Foundry’s John Linnman “It’s pretty clear that not only is 8K not suitable for these machines (with the exception of The Tourist) but that an 8K display isn’t even desirable. I wouldn’t want that.”

The Tourist was the first native 8K rendered game The game will be available on the latest generation consoles and will be released in 2021.

When the PlayStation 5 was first released in 2020, Sony said: “The PS5 is compatible with 8K displays at launch, and will be able to output resolutions up to 8K when content is available with supported software following a future system software update.”

Is Sony now saving this 8K support exclusively for its unannounced but new smartphone? The much-awaited PlayStation 5 Prowhich is set to launch later this year?
