The Borderlands movie has been in the news recently, unfortunately, not for the right reasons. This movie, based on Gearbox’s game of the same name, is set to release in 2018. And, now we have a better idea of just how big a commercial flop this Cate Blanchett-starrer actually was. According to the film industry data website Number (via PC Gamer), the film’s theatrical release ended up with only $30,975,300.
While I certainly wouldn’t expect anything less than $31 million in my bank account, from the perspective of a Hollywood big screen release, that figure isn’t really that great. To give more context, it was estimated that Borderlands’ production costs were around $115 million. Meanwhile, its marketing and distribution costs were reported to be $30 million.
PC Gamer notes that while these latest figures for Borderlands are certainly disappointing for those involved, it’s actually not the worst video game adaptation ever made. It’s fared better than filmmaker Uwe Boll’s release, anyway.

But, despite this small win, Borderlands’ financial performance so far (its streaming figures are not included here) still lags behind films like the doomed Rosamund Pike-starring Doom movie, according to reports. Number The film grossed $58.7 million worldwide during its theatrical run.
Earlier this month, Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford defended the studio’s recent flops such as the Borderlands film. The company was compared to the BeatlesWriting on social media, Pitchford said he would “keep making stuff” and later added the English rock band to the conversation.
As far as what happens next in this series is concerned, Borderlands 4 was announced in AugustWhile the team at Gearbox hasn’t announced a release date yet, they have said that the game will arrive in 2025. It will be available on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
