From the 1940s to the 1970s, it was claimed that it was Mafia-run gambling schemes that were corrupting America’s youth. Officials argued that pinball is a game of luck, not skill, making it similar to gambling and easily manipulated for profit.

The ban in New York City finally ended in 1976 when Roger Sharp, a pinball expert, demonstrated in court that pinball requires skill. In a dramatic move, Sharp called his shot – predicting where the ball would land – proving that it was not entirely chance.

His performance convinced the court and the ban was lifted, marking a turning point for pinball’s reputation. Soon cities across America followed suit and pinball machines re-emerged as a beloved pastime.
