Lapz, the Apple Vision Pro app that streams Formula One races in mixed reality, has been halted after F1 asked it to stop using its content. As reported uploadvr, In a message posted for discord channelLapz says it has paused distribution through TestFlight while it “explores licensing opportunities with various racing leagues and technology partners.”
The message read, “F1® has respectfully asked us to temporarily cease the use of their F1®TV broadcast rights in our platform while we continue to advance our roadmap and enhance the beta experience. “
lapz started just a concept video Created by designer John Lepore. However, the video garnered a lot of attention, leading Lepore to work with a group of developers to create an initial version of the app, which launched via TestFlight later in July.
Lapaz uses web views to display the race on a virtual screen, while also allowing F1 fans to keep track of each racer’s position on a 3D map. While the app itself is free, testers will need to link their F1 Pro subscription to use it. The Verge Reached out to F1 with a request for comment but did not immediately receive a response.
For now, the future of Lapz is unclear, whether it will remain an F1-focused app or allow users to watch other motorsports. In a reply on Discord, Lapaz said that if his dispute with F1 is not resolved, Apple “may need to shut down our TestFlight.”
