When it costs £700, who is the PS5 Pro for anyway?

Tomorrow Sony has finally announced the long-rumored PS5 Pro In a technical presentation conducted by Mark Cerny. This console is a more advanced version of the PlayStation 5 that increases its graphics capabilities, and even improves backward compatibility with some PS4 games.

Yet the biggest issue is its £700 price tag. On top of that, it’s a digital console, so physical games require a £100 disc drive add-on, with an additional £25 for an optional stand to hold the console vertically. That’s a total of £825 – without games, plus the fancy TV needed to show off those extra pixels.

The response so far has been overwhelmingly negative, mostly because of that audacious price tag. Chris Tapsell of Eurogamer wroteThe PS5 Pro is “an argument against ‘pro’ consoles altogether”. It’s certainly more in line with the expectations of PC players than console players.

With all that in mind, then, what are the benefits of this new console? Who is its target audience? And would we consider buying one ourselves?
